Doug Shimell is an Emmy-winning journalist who has reported for NBC Philadelphia & FOX News Philadelphia, reported and anchored for NBC Kansas City, Missouri, and was a tornado chaser for NBC Oklahoma City.During the course of his journalism career, Shimell has reported on major breaking news events locally and around the country. His coverage of the high profile Tom Capano/Anne Marie Fahey murder case brought him national attention on MSNBC and NBC's "Today" Show. His 4-hour live breaking news coverage of the Capano verdict garnered him an Emmy nomination. Shimell's coverage is also noted in one of the many books written about the case.His reporting created laws protecting consumers against identity theft, brought arrests of scam contractors, and closings of inhumane puppy mill pet stores. His exclusive reports of the Amy Grossberg/Brian Peterson infant murder case changed the complexion of the investigation.Shimell's stories on the illegal Mexican diet pill trade resulted in an FDA ban on certain drugs. His reports on political corruption in Texas brought arrests and resignations. While working as a political reporter in Oklahoma, his story on illegal campaign contributions to the governor made Shimell the object of a "State of the State" speech and ultimately led to the governor's resignation. His coverage of a Philadelphia-area group that brought an entire prom to Katrina-ravaged Biloxi High School in Mississippi netted him another Emmy nomination.Doug's coverage of a fatal natural gas explosion in Northeast Philadelphia brought a national Emmy nomination and helped initiate a state investigation of Philadelphia Gas Works. His work has also been acknowledged with awards from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, National Press Photographers Association, The Livingston Awards and numerous local press club honors.Born in New Rochelle, New York, Shimell grew up in Connecticut. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Journalism. He is an avid tennis player, workout buff and captain of NBC10's "Fighting Peacocks" gold medal-winning Dragonboat team.His fledgling acting career has also landed him roles in movies filmed in Philadelphia such as, "Booted," "Miss December" and "Mancation." Doug is also an associate producer on the Morgan Spurlock-produced documentary, "I am Santa Claus" from Double Windsor Films. He is also featured in the 2016 "Meet the Hitlers" documentary from Matt Ogens.Shimell is also an associate producer for "Ghostheads", a 2016 documentary in association with Sony Pictures' "Ghostbusters."
