After two years military service, he attended college in his home state of Kentucky and afterward held various jobs including a stint as a sales rep at Pillsbury. He later moved to Nashville where he formed the rock band "Avant Garde". At the time I thought my career was on the rise. I had no idea it was Wheel of Fortune that was on the rise. The show escaped cancellation multiple times while I was hosting, so I wanted financial security in case NBC decided to dump it. Looking back at it, I let my ego get in the way of my decision making and it was a terrible mistake. I'm happy for the success Merv (Griffin) has had with the show. I have no idea if the show would become a huge hit if I stayed on board. Show less «
