The series presents a series of thriller events about an idealist and her husband who are making a heinous deal with a mysterious investor. Both spouses put their trust in the test and their lives in a strange twist when they decided to propose the deal with that notorious investor. Both spouses live a turbulent life through a series of anthologies dealing with different ethical tales and the impact of their decision that changed the whole course of life.
A show in which Renée Zellweger is biting off chunks of scenery, shredding them with her dainty white teeth, and digesting them on camera while everyone else sits limply in her shadow.
The 10-part drama is also very addictive and you may well find yourself devouring episodes as if polishing off an extra large plate of chips even though you're already stuffed.
There is a prestige drama version of the show in which Anne's long game is actually surprising, and there is a guilty-pleasure version of the show that burns through twice the plot in half the time.
Zellweger's primary role here is just to deliver lines deliciously. She not only succeeds in the task, but she turns it into a three-course banquet... She makes the best of what she's given - if only the rest of What/If could keep pace with her.
Had What/If been The Renee Zellweger Show, it would have been fantastic. As it stands, she's the only thing saving the series from terminal mediocrity.
When Zellweger's not on screen, What/If is a mostly empty, broad strokes neo-noir soap, frothy and forgettable. When she appears, it's still all of those things-- but dear lord, please pass the popcorn.
