Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson star as former FBI Dir. James Comey and President Donald J. Trump in this limited series of the story of two powerful men, whose strikingly different ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.
There's nevertheless something useful about seeing the dry pages of nonfiction brought to life, in a production that's hardy flawless but whose stellar casting represents showboating in the best TV sense of the term.
At its best, though, The Comey Rule is a horror film, and the monster is Donald Trump (played by Brendan Gleeson with a gruff manliness that's almost but not quite flattering to the whiner in chief).
The Comey Rule may not be a great event series, but it's a damned compelling one, with a real-life tale that still beggars belief and a fantastic group of actors to tell it.
There's good and bad parts of the film that I can't say for certain moves the needle in the political world, but everyone will be left to make their own assertions on the validity of the facts and determine which loyalty is worth fighting for.
And so, a month and change before the election... there is The Comey Rule, ready for you. You could certainly watch it on Sunday night. Though I can't for the life of me imagine why you would want to.
