Sherlock - Season 4 Episode 02: The Lying Detective
Moriarty is dead, and here comes another villain. The upcoming season is expected to explore darker themes, compared to the past seasons. It was speculated that Mary will eventually die in the series, as it was her fate in the short stories.
After the let-down that was the season premiere last week, Sherlock seems to have finally taken baby steps in the right direction with The Lying Detective.
Though "The Lying Detective" may be built on a house-of-cards logic, it's still a pretty house. We're left with much groundwork to be done for next week's season finale, and plenty of questions.
It feels like Holmes and Watson's relationship has finally been restored. The introduction of the mysterious and dangerous Eurus feels like a bold direction in which to take the final episode.
Well, this was a mind-trip. Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2 made my head spin, and I loved it. The uncertainties, twists and turns made for a packed and intriguing episode.
It all adds up to "The Lying Detective" being a mixed bag of entertaining Sherlock set pieces and the show reaching too far to set up a surprising endgame.
Sherlock continues to be a class act - a testament to the almost hallucinatory talents of creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, and proof of the malleable potential of Arthur Conan Doyle's pipe-smoking detective.
