CRITICS OF "Kevin (Probably) Saves the World - Season 1"
Yahoo! TV
The show has a Touched By An Angel blended with Highway to Heaven aura, lightened by Ritter's gift for physical comedy (a trait he seems to have inherited from his talented dad, the late John Ritter).
[Jason] Ritter is a likable, able comic actor who shines in big parts and little ones, though I am not quite sure that he has been perfectly cast here.
Quibbles about the premise aside, Ritter makes and sells this show. He balances the pathos and the comedy. In lesser hands, this hour just would not be appealing.
Our Kevin here is played by Jason Ritter, scrappy and sincere, and strong enough to keep the whole thing afloat despite tonal inconsistencies that would sink other shows.
Everybody keeps talking about how awful Kevin used to be... That's not what Jason Ritter is playing and I don't know if it's something he's capable of.... And if you can't buy that, you can't buy the grand redemption arc that the show is based upon.
Unfortunately, the show is lacking not just gonads but an original premise, a credible cast, a watchable screenplay or any discernible reason to exist.
