Winning actors and decent gags give a bit of lift to this sweet-natured family comedy, but the "adult with an imaginary friend" storyline hasn't aged well.
It seems like a harmless little diversion at this point, with Elfman and Dratch playing well off one another in a fantasy that may have enough winning moments to survive its tough-to-pull-off premise.
There's actually a decent sitcom in here... but the imaginary friend is completely unnecessary. It feels like a lame gimmick. The show would be better without it.

Probably the biggest flaw of Imaginary Mary is that it could also be called Superfluous Mary. I don't find Mary spectacularly annoying, though surely many viewers will. I just found her essentially unnecessary.
