Germany had an army consisting of numbers in the millions, which dwarfed the battle-ready British army of only half a million, including the army reserves. As the relationship between the United Kingdom and Germany began to sour, troops belonging to the British army and the BEF, The British Expeditionary Force, were deployed and sent to the beaches of France. This was trench warfare.
