Three pets Chance, an adventurous American bulldog; Shadow, a wise golden retriever; and Sassy, a cautious cat, are dropped off at a friend's ranch. When the animals get worried because they believe they have been abandoned, they escape from the California ranch to find their owners in San Francisco.
This film is clever even with its human actors, dispensing with the first film's animal-loving hermits and playing up the importance of a cute, newly typical American family.
