Wikus Van De Merwe was one of the head operatives of the relocation of the prawn-like alien residents of District 9 to their new homes in District 10 when he was exposed to an alien chemical. This chemical caused his DNA to rapidly fuse with Prawn DNA, giving him the ability to operate alien machinery and weapons. Despite being married to the daughter of one of the highest leaders in the MNU, one of the worlds largest weapons manufacturers, he is seen as expendable and hunted down by both the MNU and the war-hungry Nigerian gangs inhabiting District 9. He finds shelter with a Prawn named Christopher and his young son. Together they endeavor to recover the liquid the MNU confiscated, which will return Wikus back to his human state and allow Christopher and his son to return home.Wikus is seen by the public in a mixed light, some viewing him as a traitor, others viewing him as a champion of alien rights.
