Bathsheba became the mistress of King David and got pregnant by her lover. David summoned Uriah back from the battle on a pretext. The plan was to have Uriah sleep with his wife and fool him into believing that he caused the pregnancy.However, Uriah ruined the plan by abstaining from sex. Uriah was preparing for his return to battle and ritually abstained from all contact with his wife. David decided to get rid of Uriah and marry Bathsheba himself. David sent Uriah back to combat, but gave secret instructions to general Joab (David's right-hand- man) to ensure the soldier's demise.During a battle. Joab placed Uriah on the front lines of the battle. He then instructed the rest of the soldiers to move away. Leaving Uriah alone to face the enemies. Uriah was killed in combat, as planned. David proceeded to marry Bathsheba.
