Tor Johnson was a wrestler who became a film star, and finally a popular Halloween mask. He was born in 1903 in Sweden, and became known as the Super Swedish Angel during his wrestling career, weighing as much as 400 pounds. His startling good looks were offset by his large size and shaved head, giving him an imposing appearance.Johnson began his film career in the thirties, often playing heavies with no dialogue due to his thick accent. The movies ranged from comedies, such as Lost in a Harem and Ghost Catchers (both 1944) to film noir, such as Behind Locked Doors (1948) to b-grade horror and sci fi fare, such as Night of the Ghouls (1959) and The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961).Johnson is best remembered for his work with the director Ed Wood. In particular, his role as Lobo from Bride of the Monster, (1955) and Inspector Clay (who is raised from the dead as a zombie) in Plan Nine from Outer Space (1959). In the biopicture by Tim Burton, Ed Wood is falsely portrayed as the man who convinced Tor Johnson to enter the picture business although he had actually been acting for nearly two decades before meeting Wood. Otherwise his portrayal, as a kind and pleasant man, matches with the reminiscences of those who worked with him.Johnson died in 1971, but his presence continued in the form of a popular mask, based on his characterization of Lobo. This mask remains available today. Show less «
