Steven Harper is the principal at Winslow High. As a student, he was a gang-banger until a teacher helped him out of a jam. This inspired him to go into teaching. At one point, he taught in Room 14, better known as The Dungeon . He admits that he got the job as principal because of Affirmative Action policies in the 90s. While he is known to care for teachers and students alike, he can also be inflexible and rigid, especially if someone is guilty of not reporting wrongdoing , which is why he refused to endorse student John LeBlonde for the Magna Club Award, driving him to commit suicide, and why he fired beloved coach Kevin Riley, causing a severe teacher shortage when six of them quit in solidarity. He is constantly doing battle with the school superintendent and the board for funding and keeping staff members with whom he is friendly. At one point, he was friendly with his vice principal Scott Guber, though he did prevent him from becoming principal at a prestigious private school. This friendship came to a screeching halt when both of them pursued teacher Marilyn Sudor. Harper ending up the victor.
