Gabi had two sisters Louise and Marie and a little brother Pierre.At a young age she chose to enter the convent of the order of the Sisters of Charity of Belgium. The reason she joined was because of personal reasons.During her postulancy and novitiate, Sister Luke (her new name) had problems with obedience to the bell and to her job. Sister Luke and three other nuns went to Antwerp to study Tropical medicine as all four wanted to go to the Congo.However, Sister Luke was sent to a mental sanitarium to start her nursing there. After getting attacked by a patient Mother Superior chooses to send her to the Congo. Working with a strict yet friendly doctor named Dr. Fortunati, Sister Luke wants to work with the natives but she is sent to work with the whites. After a bout with TB Sister Luke and the doctor become good friends.Sister Luke is sent back to Belgium but she cannot go back to the Congo because of World War II. Sister Luke is sent to a hospital in Holland. However the place has lots of German soldiers patrolling it.After the tragic death of her father by the Germans, Sister Luke is angry and unforgiving. Sister Luke wants to leave but Mother Superior and her confessor try to dissuade her.Sister Luke chooses to leave the convent in the end.
