Walt Longmire is the sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Longmire is reminiscent of lawmen from the Wild West era. He is a dogged and introspective man of a few words, unlike other old-school lawmen, Walt prefers to ask questions before shooting.. Like most old-school lawmen, Walt uses his instincts to solve crimes, and does not quit until he gets his man. He lives alone, and is haunted by the death of his wife a year earlier. He is also a source of worry for his daughter Cady and Victoria Vic Moretti, one of his deputies.Death of his wife.Walt lost his wife the previous year. At the beginning of the series it was stated that she died of cancer, however it is later revealed that she was stabbed by a mugger in Denver. At one point, Walt traveled to Denver to kill the mugger, but could not go through with it and almost got himself killed over it. Longmire's grief caused him to enter a downward spiral that caused him to shirk most of his duties as sheriff, and led one of his deputies, Branch Connally, to challenge him for sheriff. The two would be at odds for Season 1 and most of Season 2 until the election.
