In civilian life, Sarah was a promising young scientist, finishing up a second doctorate in epidemiology (her first is in biochemistry) when the disaster hit that wiped out the world she had known. She was summoned from her lab at Carnegie Mellon by government agents that recruited her to work on the top priority project to discover - and cure - the cause of the sudden proliferation of cannibalistic corpses. Sarah knew that they needed someone with her expertise, and willingly agreed to join the team, under the supervision of Dr. Logan, famous research surgeon. The Seminole Containment Facility, which had been designed to house nuclear waste, but never put into operation, became their shelter and laboratory, and a small unit of soldiers were assigned to facilitate the work of the scientific team (and protect them from the living dead).Unfortunately for Sarah, being the one woman in an all-male society under military supervision did not turn out to be conducive to productive scientific research. She soon became involved with one of the soldiers, Miguel Salazar, but this did not relieve the tensions involved with interacting with the other men. Ultimately Sarah found that she had to be self-sufficient in order to survive the conditions, and learned to handle herself. The project collapsed due to conflicts between the civilian scientists and the military, which surprisingly was lost by the armed soldiers, who were left in the shelter while Sarah and two civilian companions fled to the south Caribbean.
