Rolfe Gruber is a seventeen-year-old messanger boy. He delivers telegrams for the army. Mostly throughout the movie, we see him delivering them to the Von Trapp Family. The oldest daughter of the Von Trapp family, sixteen-year-old Liesel, is basically head over heels in love with him. She is extremly flirty, especially in the duet between her and Rolfe. He, of course, is in love with her, and only wants what's best for her. Rolfe demonstrates this during their duet, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, leading her to believe that he will definatly take care of her because he is good year older than her. Supposedly wiser than her. But we see later in the movie, his love for her, isn't as great as it is in the begining. Before Captain Von Trapp and Maria come home from their honeymoon, Rolfe gives Liesel a telegram for her father. When she invites him over to their home (in her, of course, flirty manner), he rejects her by saying something along the lines of, I have found that I have more important things to do. And your father will too if he knows what's good for him. And she is ultimatly crushed. Near the end of the movie, when the Von Trapp family is trying to escape to Switzerland, Rolfe sees them, but does nothing to attract attention. As Captain Von Trapp moves closer, Rolfe tries to act big, but still, doesn't call attention to them. We think it is because, inside, he really doesnt want to do this to the family of the girl he loves. Because Liesel pleaded him not to. Because he knew he wasnt a Nazi. But as soon as Captain Von Trapp says, You'll never be one of them, after pulling the gun from Rolfe's hand, Rolfe makes up his mind to prove Von Trapp wrong. Rolfe gives him a stern look and screams, Lieutenant! Lieutenant! They're here!! And he betrayes the Von Trapp family. Apparently, he didn't love her enough to keep his mouth shut, and not rat them out. After this, Liesel gets over Rolfe, and gets on with her life in Swizterland.Originally posted by Bevvv circa 2008 on old character page (but moved to here to allow Rolf without an 'e' to be added to this new character page).
