Roland Tembo is a famous animal hunter, hired by InGen. He did not appear in the novel. He came to Isla Sorna along with his hunting partner, Ajay Sidhu, in hopes of gaining the ultimate trophy, a male T. Rex. Dieter Stark was hired by InGen to be his second-in-command, but shows little respect for Tembo. When the Tyrannosaurs attacked the campsite (due to the smell of their infant's blood on Harding's jacket), Tembo couldn't fire at the father Tyrannosaur because Nick Van Owen disabled Tembo's elephant gun by removing the bullets from the shells. Tembo, instead, tranquilized him. Despite the fact that he finally got his trophy, he was saddened when he realized that he was the only survivor, besides Ludlow, Malcolm, Nick, Sarah, and Kelly. Ajay and all of Tembo's men were all killed by Velociraptors, except for Dieter, who was killed by compys, and for Carter and Burke, who were both killed by the mother Tyrannosaur. As a result, Tembo expressed his empathy for the loss of his men. When Ludlow invited him to be part of the Jurassic Park staff in San Diego, he declined saying I've spent enough time in the company of death. He then leaves the island by helicopter, with a different view of hunting. He was played by Pete Postlethwaite. It can be arguable that Roland's name is based on Warren Zevon's song Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner in which Roland, an infamous mercenary, is thwarted and killed by a fellow comrade, Van Owen, much like Vince Vaughan's character, Nick Van Owen, foils his plan to kill the T-Rex. It is unknown if Roland will return for Jurassic Park IV,due to the death of Pete Postlethwaite
