Born in Minnesota to Bill Andersen and Jillian Andersen eleven years prior to the events of the film. Had five Core Memories (including her first goal in ice hockey) that fueled five Islands of Personality; Goofball Island, Friendship Island, Hockey Island, Honesty Island, and Family Island.Riley is eleven years old when her family moves to San Francisco, California. She is slow to adjust to their new home and a new school. A sequence of events resulting from her lead emotion Joy trying to suppress Sadness (and thus, force Riley to be happy) leads to the two of them being ejected to the far reaches of her mind and the loss of all five Core memories, leaving her to be driven by her other three emotions; Fear, Anger, and Disgust along with five defunct Personality Islands. All of which subsequently collapse one by one, leading in turn to the collapse of her personality. The three remaining emotions struggle in vain to keep Riley happy in Joy's absence. After a few days in San Francisco she decides under the influence of Anger that the only way to make her life tolerable again is to return to Minnesota. She runs away, stealing her mother's credit card and using it to purchase a bus ticket, only to back down at the last second when Sadness finds her way back to the console. Eventually she returns to her parents and confesses that she misses their old home and was pretending to be happy all along. They share a heartfelt family moment and Riley starts to embrace the recent changes in her life at last. A new Core memory forms that leads to the birth of a new Family Island. In the film's epilogue Riley has turned twelve and now has seven Islands of Personality, including new islands such as Boyband, Fashion, and Tragic Vampire Romance and rebuilt versions of old Islands including Hockey and Friendship island with friendly arguments expansion. Joy has retained her position as Riley's lead emotion.
