Ray (born in 1960) is a small time criminal and a gang banger from east Los Angeles. A former high school/college dropout, he became a gang member (evident by the type of handgun he carries and his shabby clothing) frequently riding the bus operated by the Santa Monica Intercity Bus Lines from Venice, Los Angeles to downtown LA. He presumably sells drugs and trades arms in downtown out of the sights of the Los Angeles Police Department. Since he regularly takes the bus downtown from Venice, it is hinted that he lives in Venice. The reason why he doesn't drive, is unknown. One day, during rush hour morning, Ray is relaxing in his seat on bus 2525 when he sees Officer Jack Traven trying to board the moving bus. Suspicious, he focuses his attention on Jack. After several long minutes, when Jack boards the bus, he tells the bus driver Sam to stay above 50 MPH. After forcing Annie to sit down, he says that there is a slight situation on the bus . Panicked, Ray pulled out his gun, fearing that Jack was going to arrest him, ordered Jack to stay away from him. Jack pulled out his gun in defense and the two had a gun standoff. Jack, who doesn't care about Ray's crimes, puts his gun away into his pocket and tries to reason with Ray and calm him down. Ray at first refuses to listen, yells at Jack to shut up and orders the driver to stop the bus, even though he can't.As Jack begs for trust, another man, Ortiz, a construction worker, grabs Ray and tries to grab the pistol from his hand and tries to subdue Ray. Ray accidentally fires his gun and the bullet misses Jack but it hits the bus driver Sam. Though not fatal, Sam is badly bleeding and injured. Another bus passenger, Annie Porter carries an injured Sam to Helen and Mrs Kamino to mend his injuries. Jack uses his jacket and puts it on Sam to stop the bleeding. He then shoves Ray back into his seat and handcuffs him to his seat and orders him to cooperate otherwise he will arrest him. Jack explains the situation to everyone on board: There is a bomb on this bus. If the bus slows down, it explodes. If anyone tries to get off, it blows up. Another man, Terry refuses to believe him, but Jack convinces him that there is actually a bomb. Some other passengers think Jack is joking but they realise the bomb is real as the bus speeds through the busy city streets of Los Angeles. As time goes by, Ray has a change of heart and starts becoming sensible, respecting, cooperating, and obeying Jack's orders. He helps Jack prevent the bus from tipping over when it makes a hard right and is relieved when jack tells him and everybody else that the offloaded bus driver Sam is going to be OK, however, Helen dies. later, when there is a gap on the under construction freeway, Jack unlocks the haandcuffs on Ray. Ray deeply apologizes for panicking and causing a huge drama on the bus as well as shooting the bus driver saying that he didn't mean to shoot the guy [Sam] . Jack forgives him. Ray holds onto his seat for dear life as the bomb laden bus accelerates to full speed ahead, jumps the gap, flies fifty feet and makes a bumpy touchdown close to perfection. Later after the bus enters LAX and circles the runways, Ray watches as Jack disembarks the bus, joining Lieutenant Mac and Norwood, after being granted permission by the bomber. Later, as Jack is being dragged underneath the bus while trying to dismantle the bomb after the wire connecting the towed sledge to the SWAT officer's truck breaks, Ray obeys orders from Annie and looks at the back window of the bus but he cannot see Jack. He immediately reports this to Annie saying He's not back here .When Ortiz unscrews the floor access panel with his screwdriver from his toolbox, he reports that he sees Jack and he's okay. Ray helps hold Ortiz and selflessly helps pull Jack aboard, saving him (Jack) from being run over> Later, after Jack throws a tantrum, he discovers a hidden security camera on the bus just over his left shoulder the bomber is using to watch them and their movements on one of his TV screens though he cannot hear them. He can just see their movements. Jack and Mac come up with a plan. Since the bus is leaking fuel because Jack punctured the fuel tank to avoid getting run over, He orders Ray and everybody else on the bus to sit still in their seats and just to look straight ahead. After a few seconds, Annie warns Jack that they are extremely low on fuel and Jack orders mac to run the tape, forget about the fuel truck and bring a rescue bus. Lieutenant Mac orders the News crews to film the recorded footage on loop so that it runs over and over, creating the illusion that they are sitting still on the bus and circling around LAX while they are actually offloading the passengers, thus preventing detonation.Once the bad guy has been blinded to their real movements, a LAX airport bus full of LAPD SWAT cops including Mac and Norwood arrive with a gangplank, a broom stick and some rope. After nailing the wooden plank into place, the tired, anxious and scared passengers disembark the bus one by one as the fuel leaks out. It won't be long before the tanks run dry, the engine will stop, the speed will drop to 0 and the bus will explode. However, Jack manages to get all of the passengers off before all the fuel leaks out. As Ray disembarks, he takes a quick moment to thank Jack for saving his life. Ray and Jack part on good terms and Ray disembarks the danger bus onto the airport shuttle bus, no longer fearing that he will be arrested. He feels sorry for what he did and is ready to turn himself in. As the last bus passenger, tourist Doug Stephens in the blue suit attempts to disembark, Ray bends down and assists Ortiz and the SWAT cops with an outstretched hand. The rescue is interrupted as the right rear tire of the bus blows out and pops. The gangplank breaks and the two buses separate. The danger bus, with Jack and Annie still on board veers to the left while the rescue bus continues straight, dragging along Doug Stephens as he grabs on tightly for dear life. Once again, a transformed Ray selflessly and desperately assists Ortiz and the SWAT cops by holding on to the tourist Doug. Ray helps the others pull aboard Doug in the airport bus before he is run over, saving another innocent life, the life of an innocent tourist Doug Stephens. Ortiz, Ray, and Doug share a group hug, and then watch out the windows helplessly as the airport bus drives away, leaving jack and Annie to fend for themselves. After fixing the adjustments of the steering wheel and the gas pedal by wedging it into place by the broom stick and the rope, setting the bus on it's steady course, they escape through a floor access panel and emerge with minor injuries. Out of control and out of fuel, the empty bus drives through an empty LAX hangar, emerges out from the other side and drives off to a remote corner of the airfield. It rams into an empty Boeing 707 cargo plane of the fake, fictional airline Pacific Courier Freight being towed across the airfield tarmac having just emerged from the hanger and both the bus and the cargo plane explode into a fireball, bursting into flames. The fiery explosion and burning, intense fire flames scare all of the passengers of bus 2525 including Ray who is shocked by the intensity of the explosion and fire. He then takes a moment to thank Jack for saving his life and stares at the massive destruction in silence and agony. As the released bus passengers are lead away by the LAPD SWAT cops on the airport bus to safety and escorted to the Arrivals terminal, the 707 is destroyed and burned on the tarmac.Following this, Ray's fate remains unknown. He is never seen again and never heard of again, just like the rest of the passengers on Bus 2525. He is also never seen or heard of again in the poorly made sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control. Weather he later got arrested and imprisoned by the cops, released (on parole) remains a mystery. But what is known is that he didn't die. Show less «
