Rafe McCawley is Defiance's richest and most powerful human, who managed to hang onto his family's gulanite mine territory through the wars. (Gulanite is a valuable ore that is used by all species for many things, including fuel.) Rafe serves on the city council.Rafe disobeyed his strict father and went to fight in the Pale Wars and returned home to St. Louis -- now Defiance -- to assume his rightful position. As one of the founders of Defiance, he longs for the old days, but enjoys the power of his mining holdings and uses them to advance his family's position in the town's political sphere. He is distrustful of the Votans and wants things to return to how they were before their arrival.Background: He has three children: Luke, Quentin and Christie. He favors Luke, even though he is headstrong. Their mother Pilar died shortly after Christie was born and there is some question about the circumstances of her death. His father Chow Down Brown McCawley was a dog food manufacturer and Rafe is constantly trying to live down that legacy.He aspired to be a photographer before the wars. Show less «
