The sibilant tones of the bespectacled Gestapo officer Preissen contrast with his bullying superior Herr Kuhn. Preissen, precise with his briefcase, announces the delivery of Roger Bartlett to the camp Commandant, and hands over, or rather drops, the handcuff keys with a hint of insolence. When von Luger spoils the effect of Herr Kuhn's exit by reminding him to collect the receipt, Preissen wordlessly takes it, places it in his case and snaps it shut. After the escape Preissen, now senior and behind his own desk, interrogates Cavendish with a series of Kafkaesque questions in a deliberate attempt to disorient the prisoner, whom he then dismisses peremptorily. Later still, he greets news of the capture of Bartlett and MacDonald with a long sigh of satisfaction. As the two prisoners are brought in, Preissen has the last word: You are going to wish you had never put us to so much trouble. Preissen is sinister and softly-spoken, a balding civil servant with a little moustache and glasses. He is also deadly. Show less «
