The movie begins showing an unorganised man who is not coping well with the his current divorce proceedings. we learn that he is an author and that he was once caught for plagarism. this is relevant because throughout the film there is another character known as John Shooter who claims to have written a passage out of one of Mort's books before Mort had. John Shooter is violent and dangerous displaying this by actions such as first killing Mort's dog then upgrading to arson and murder eventually we find out that john shooter is an alter-ego of Mort Rainey he kills his ex-wife amy and her new beau with a shovel then buries them in his backyard where he grows corn over them. After all this Mort is more organised and self-confident as he sits at his computer re-writing the ending to one of his stories so it ends in the way that he killed amy.
