Michael Vronsky is the protagonist of The Deer Hunter's plotline. Michael is a steel worker in Clairton, Pennsylvania, in the heart of the steel mills. In the late 1960s, Michael and his friends, Nick and Steven, are preparing to go to Vietnam to fight. Steven, for personal reasons, gets married to his fiancee, Angela, just two days before leaving for Vietnam. Michael is one of the groomsmen. After Steven and Angela's wedding, the bridal party is held at Lemko Hall. There, Michael and his friends (Nick, Steven, Axel, John, and Stan) get drunk. After the party, without any delay, Michael heads out hunting. Michael is serious when it comes to hunting deer, showing great ethic in the sport. Stan shows little concern when he leaves his boots at home for a consecutive time. Michael, being as serious about hunting as he is, refuses to give Stanley is extra pair. Michael and Stanley have always budded heads, and this hunting trip was no exception. Michael kills a deer, and the guys all return that night with a trophy. Michael travels to Vietnam as a Green Beret, Nick and Steven are regular Airborne soldiers. Michael, along with Nick and Steven, are captured by the Viet Cong. They are forced to play Russian Roulette. This mentally scares Michael. A few months later, Nick is seduced by the thrill of Russian Roulette and goes AWOL in Saigon, Vietnam. Michael returns home to Pennsylvania the following year. By the end of the film, Nick has been discovered dead in Saigon from playing Russian Roulette. The once cheering Michael, now is a stiff hearted soldier as he attends Nick's funeral.
