Mel is one of the few black students at Lee High school. He is on the football team and seems to get along with everyone, though he hangs out mostly with Benny and O'bannion. Melvin loves to compete, he's seen playing dice and pool for money. Mel is one of the seniors who participates in the hazing of Mitch, but later on lets him keep his change and offers him a beer.
