Matthew Cuthbert and his Sister Marilla lived and worked their whole lives in the house in which they were born, on their family farm, Green Gables, outside of the town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Neither ever marries or has children. When Matthew starts getting too old to run the farm by himself, they decide to adopt an orphan boy to help out, and take over when Matthew is gone.
