At the beginning of this film, Mary Ann Lomax (Charlize Theron) relocates to the big city lights of NYC with her husband Kevin (Keanu Reeves). They're extremely excited over Kevin's recent promotion to a prominent law firm in Manhattan. Not only will they get the big money, but the high profile cases too. Mary Ann contents herself with finding just the right shade to put on her living room walls, but she can't shake the feeling that there is something sinister in their newfound surroundings. She doesn't fit in well with the New York soceity women who are painted and pinched to within an inch of their lives, and have ice running through veins. Her small town mentality has never left her, and she can't seem to acclimate herself to the ever changing demands that are being placed on Kevin and herself. She finds herself spiraling down into a state of hallucination and terror, and it's too late before anyone stops to realize that her fear was justified.
