1976 Southern Penninsula Athletic League All-Around Gymnastics Champion.1976 Northern California All-Around Gymnastics Champion. Coached by Stanford Coach Sadao Hamada.1976-77 Quit gymnastics and started wrestling at Ashland High School, Ashland, Oregon at 130 lbs.1977 kicked off the Ashland High Varsity for not winning enough in competition even though he won all his challenge matches to make the team. Mark dropped out of Ashland High and transferred to Palo Alto High School and wrestled for Coach Ed Hart.Between 1977 and 1978 Mark gained 30 lbs and grew several inches. He moved up several weight classes and won the California High School State Wrestling Championship at 159 lbs for Palo Alto High School. Mark did not win any of the 3 scheduled 16-team tournaments until the state qualifying tournaments. Then won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, the Regionals, the Central Coast Section, and the California State Championships with over 1000 schools represented. Mark considers this the most miraculous year of his life and started to believe in God.In 1978 Mark was awarded a full scholarship to UCLA and had a freshman record of 18-8. His coach, 2-time NCAA Champion Dave Auble suggested Mark cut to 150lbs, 20 lbs below his normal weight. 4 of his losses came on a road trip at 150lbs. After the trip Mark moved back to 158lbs.In 1979 Mark and Dave were at the same weight but both made the Junior World Team to compete in the Junior World Championships in Ulan Bator, Mongolia (<20 years old) with Mark at 163 lbs and Dave at 180lbs. After returning to UCLA they decided to leave UCLA due to turmoil between the Head Coach Dave Auble and assistant coach Chris Horpel. They transfer to Oklahoma University.1980 Mark went from unranked to ranked 2nd in the nation by winning the Great Plains tournament defeating the #1 ranked wrestler in the NCAA's Mike DeAnna 8-1 in the finals. A spiritual experience occurred in the middle of the match revealing the secrets of wrestling.1981 NCAA Champion for Oklahoma University. Defeated Mike DeAnna in the finals 10-4. Finished his sophomore year with a record of 24-3.1982 NCAA Outstanding Wrestler. Stopped Ed Banach from becoming the first 4-time NCAA Champion in history winning 16-8 in the Finals. Many consider this the greatest match in NCAA history. 4 NCAA titles were represented at 177lbs. Finished his Junior year with a record of 27-2. Ed Banach went up a weight class to 190lbs the following year to win his 3rd NCAA title, then won the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal. Dave Schultz won the NCAA's by defeating sophomore Mike Sheets (Oklahoma State) in the finals in overtime 4-4, O.T. 1-0.1983 Won his 3rd NCAA title defeating Duane Goldman of Iowa University 4-2. Set Oklahoma University record for most victories in an undefeated season (27-0). Finished his college career with a record of 96-131983 Dave Schultz becomes the only American to win the 1983 World Championships. Dave won 8 U.S. Open titles where he was named Outstanding Wrestler 4 times. He also won 2 Greco-Roman U.S. Open titles. He won his first U.S. Open in Greco-Roman as a high school senior where he also received the award for Most Falls in the Least Time .1983 The Schultz brothers are hired to coach Stanford University by their former coach Chris Horpel. Both received a salary of $7000 a year.1984 U.S. Open Champion.1984 Olympic Champion. Broke the arm of the Turk first move of the first match in the Olympics. The Turk was European Champion and defeated all the wrestlers that boycotted the 1984 Olympics. Mark's brother Dave hurt the Yugoslavian the match right before Mark's match. The world's top official was assigned to watch the Schultz brothers for dirty moves the rest of the Olympics. Dave and Mark, along with Ed and Lou Banach become the first brothers in history to win Gold Medals in the same Olympics.1985 Super Champion Title Match. Defeated the defending 2-time World Champion from Russia 5-0.1985 U.S. Open Champion. After losing his weight cutting gear on the plane Mark wrestled up a weight at 198lbs. In the finals he defeated the 1985 World Champion at 198 lbs Bill Scherr 5-4.1985 World Champion. Mark is the only member of the 1984 Olympic Team to win the 1985 World Championships. Mark's brother Dave was the only member of the 1984 Olympic Team to win the 1983 World Championships. Mark and Dave are the only U.S. brothers to win Olympic and World gold.1985 fired by Chris Horpel, Stanford Head Wrestling Coach, the day after returning from the 1985 World Championships as World Champion. Dave receives Mark's salary and Mark's car and separates Dave and Mark for the first time in their lives.1986 Hired by John E. duPont as the Assistant Wrestling Coach at newly formed wrestling team at Villanova University. Mark becomes a member of duPont's new freestyle wrestling team Team Foxcatcher .1986 U.S. Open Champion.1987 U.S. Open Champion.1987 World Champion. First American to win the Olympics and 2 World titles.1987 fired by John E. duPont, Villanova University Head Wrestling Coach, 3 months after becoming the first World Wrestling Champion for Team Foxcatcher.1988 Villanova University drops the wrestling program after duPont founded it 2 years earlier due to charges of multiple NCAA rule violations.1988 Mark Schultz loses to Mike Sheets for Mark's first U.S. loss in 5 years. 2 weeks later Mark defeats Mike Sheets 6-2 and 13-1 to make the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team.1988 Mark makes his 6th consecutive U.S. World or Olympic Team.1990 Mark's brother World and Olympic Champion Dave Schultz hired by John E. duPont to coach Team Foxcatcher.1991 Guinness Book of World Records for most U.S. World Titles.1994 Hired as Head Wrestling Coach at Brigham Young University.1995 Inducted as a Distinguished Member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.1996 January 26 David Lesley Schultz (June 6, 1959-Jan 26, 1996) murdered by John E. duPont. duPont pleaded not guilt by reason of insanity . duPont was found guilty but mentally ill.1996 May 16 Mark makes a comeback 8 years after his last official wrestling match and accepts a fight in UFC IX (bare-knuckle rules) with one day notice against UFC VIII Runner-up Gary (Big Daddy) Goodridge and won by technical knockout. Following UFC IX, at 35 years old, Mark suffers a lumbar disc herniation and retires from competition with an MMA record of 1-0, and an unknown international freestyle wrestling record.1997 Wrote The Mark Schultz Story . Mark's autobiography and interviews are the basis for Foxcatcher a screenplay written by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye and directed by academy award nominated director Bennett Miller. Mark later changed the name of his autobiography to match the film.1998 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.2000 Brigham Young University drops wrestling.2001 Inducted as a Distinguished Member of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.2010 Dave and Mark Schultz become the first and only wrestlers inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame. Dave and Mark Schultz combined to win more National, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in history and one of only 3 brothers worldwide to win World and Olympic Gold.2012 Filming of Foxcatcher begins starring Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz, Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz, and Steve Carell as John E. duPont.
