Mameha a very famous geisha in Kyoto, the most famous in the whole Gion district. Her danna is the Baron, and she receives many priceless kimono from him. She also has a bitter rivalry with Hatsumomo due to what happened to her childhood friend, Hatsuoki. Despite her popularity and striking features, she resents Mameha with a passion because she was much more successful in securing a danna. Upon the Chairman's request and due to the fact that she stil wanted revenge against her rival, she takes in Chiyo has her younger sister. In the book, Mameha revealed to her that she was close friends with Hatsuoki, Hatsumomo's sister and rival to the great Tomihatsu. She revealed that her rival never tolerated her and succeeded in kicking her out of Gion by spreading lies to a drunkard, permanently banning her from Gion. She teaches Chiyo, now Sayuri, the arts of being a geisha, and helps her drives Hatsumomo out of Gion. She devises a plan that will make her very famous, which she succeeds, but not in the way she wanted it. The bidding war for Sayuri's mizuage had started off with Dr.Crab and Nobu, but because her mizuage had gotten expensive, he dropped out and her danna, the Baron took over. Mameha's mizuage was sold for 8000 yen, a record for several decades (although Sayuri's was sold for 11,000 yen[book] 15,000 yen in the movie, when inflation is counted, Mameha's was still the record). During the war, she moves to a smaller apartment and sells many of her kimono. After the war ends in the book, Mameha continues to attend parties with her. In the movie, Sayuri went to Gion and sought her for help since Nobu wants them to entertain the American colonel, Derricks(Prime Minister Sato in the Book). At first, she refuses and told her that after the Baron commited suicide in his pond, she had to sell everything she had for rations. She admitted that it was a painful process at first, but she made peace with herself. She now lives a more tidier, modest existance renting rooms to the poor and helping out those around her. She refuses to chase after the past, but Sayuri convinces her to help her out in remembrace to how she impressed the Baron once with a single glance. Mameha agrees by revealing that she was keeping one kimono with her. She asked her what she does know on how to entertain Americans.
