Luke is the youngest child of Phil and Claire Dunphy and is, by all accounts, Phil's best friend. After having two daughters, Phil is delighted to have Luke around to do guy kinds of things, like practice magic (well), throw a baseball (not well at all) and share gross-out humor. Luke is presented as not the sharpest kid in the world, getting easily confused by things or occasionally getting his head stuck in the banister. Claire worries that Luke will grow to be like Phil.Luke is somewhat tormented by his two older sisters, who delight in doing things to scare him, whether it's convincing him the that attic where he wants to move his room is haunted, telling him he's adopted or putting him in a dress and makeup and turning him into Betty Luke. Despite always being the baby of the family, Luke has been bumped of that status by the adorable Lily, who he considers to be his nemesis. As he grows up, Luke attempts to take on a bad boy persona, of sorts, bringing Manny along on his exploits, including taking a car for an extremely low-speed joyride down the block and sneaking into a bar mitzvah. Luke also has a quiet, knee-jerk reaction most times the police are mentioned, muttering things like, dial 911 and order a pizza, see which one gets here first and aren't they too busy winning the war on drugs?
