Lucy is staying with her uncle for the summer and meets Maps, one of four ophan boys on their first seaside holiday away from the Australian outback orphange they live in, and the attraction between the two is immediate. As the younger three orphans begin to persue a place in the hearts of a childless couple, who they think might be choosing to adopt one of them, Maps, who has lost hope of being adopted as an older teen, begins to spend most of his time with Lucy. A more worldly teen, she becomes his first (and only) love. Lucy gives Maps his first kiss and as the holiday nears it's end, she pulls him into a sexual encounter. Says Lucy, Always remember that I was your first . In that encounter, a button from Lucy's blouse comes off and falls to the floor. The day after this encounter, Maps finds out that Lucy has has to leave and go home to her Dad's; causing Maps to loose the only person who would ever love him. Maps finds Lucy's blouse button and keeps it with him until his death, years later. Maps had eventually become a priest, but his love for Lucy was never forgotten. Visitors to the story of the life of Lucy can only dream of what happened to her, as it seems she and Maps never did see each other again.
