Louis Roulet is the wealthy client of Defense Attorney Michael Haller, accused of aggravated assault and the attempted rape and murder of prostitute Regina Campo. Roulet came under the watchful eye of Haller, and his calm but determined facade was enough to convince Haller of his innocence. But as time went on, Roulet's psychopathic side began to emerge. Roulet broke into Haller's home and stole an antique pistol, which his mother later used to murder private investigator Frank Levin, who had discovered evidence implicating Roulet's involvement in the sexual victimization and murder of prostitute Martha Renteria. The pistol implicated Haller as the killer of Levin, a fact which Roulet exploited by admitting his guilt in the Campo and Renteria cases to Haller and threatening to throw him in prison should he divulge this information to the court. Haller reluctantly followed Roulet's command to defend him to the best of his ability, resulting in a dismissal of charges by the State following a controversial trial. Roulet was quickly apprehended after the trial for the murder of Renteria due to evidence provided by Lorna Taylor. Roulet, following a faked release from custody, came after Haller's ex-wife and young daughter in retaliation. Roulet was once again arrested by police in the sting operation, and thrown in prison for the rest of his life for the retaliation and the murder of Renteria.
