In antiquity, Lilith was a night demon or succubus who would prey on women and children and seduce men. In the Hebrew bible in the Book of Isaiah 34:14, Lilith's name appears but is translated as a screech owl. In Jewish and folk tradition, as in The Alphabet of Ben Sira, Lilith was the first wife of the Adam of Genesis, before Eve.
