Kylo Ren is the primary antagonist in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.Behind the ScenesEarly iterations of Kylo Ren's character design portrayed him as a cyborg who had multiple cybernetic implants to replace parts of his face, arms, and overall body. This style was scrapped in favor of a style reminiscent of Darth Vader's armor, as to highlight Ren's obsession with the Dark Lord.Kylo Ren's look went through various phases during production. In his earliest incarnation, he was an alien with one red eye, and wielded a lightsaber with a Wampa bone for a hilt. Later in production, he was a cyborg, with metal parts covering his face and arms. His final design shows him as human, but he wears a mask heavily reminiscent of Darth Vader's mask, as to reflect his obsession with the Sith Lord....PLOT SPOILERS FOLLOW...Kylo Ren is revealed early in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens to be Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa. It is implied that he was trained by Luke Skywalker and turned to the dark side after being seduced to it by Supreme Leader Snoke, causing Skywalker to go into hiding from the defeat of losing his nephew to the dark side.Kylo Ren is consumed by his need to emulate and eclipse the legacy of his Sith Lord grandfather, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. He appears to be conflicted with his dark powers, succumbing to fits of rage and uncertainty about his decisions. This uncertainty culminates in a confrontation with his father, Han Solo.Han Solo attempts to bring Kylo 'home' and return him to the light side of the force, and appears to succeed when Kylo reveals his internal suffering and gestures to hand over his lightsaber. However, Kylo's surrender is overpowered by the darkness in him and he lashes out against Solo, resulting in his father's death.Ren is gravely injured following the battle of Starkiller Base, having sustained several injuries at the hands of Chewbacca, Finn and Rey. Snoke orders General Hux of the First Order to recover Ren's body, so that his training may be completed.
