Kathy Adamson (portrayed by Jennifer Connelly) is a wife and mother who makes documentaries for PBS who's husband Brad (Patrick Wilson) is a would-be lawyer preparing to take the Bar Exam.....for the third time. Emotionally distant from her husband (and never seeming to have any sex with him either), Kathy is successful and driven. Brad is anything but. We see Brad pretending to go to the library every day supposedly to study for the Bar Exam but instead wasting time watching kids do skateboard tricks. He seems stuck in life; his wife is the chief breadwinner, he's a 'stay at home dad' who can't seem to motivate himself to do much besides take his young son to the park to play. At the park he meets Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet), another suburbanite trapped in a marriage with a distant, aloof partner who would rather surf internet porn than give her much attention. Starting as an innocent prank, Brad and Sarah kiss to shock a group of nearby mothers with their children at the park, but then discover they can't stop thinking about each other. Soon they are committing adultery together regularly in Sarah's house while Brad's son and Sarah's daughter nap downstairs. Just as Kathy begins to thaw towards her husband, she senses the affair between him and Sarah, but does not confront him. Brad talks Sarah into eloping with him, and she consents at first, then changes her mind when she realizes what an effect this would have on her daughter. Brad writes a letter to Kathy apologizing for what he's about to do, but when he wipes out spectacularly trying a skateboard trick at the park and injures himself, he realizes he still loves Kathy and he can't possibly leave her. As he's being loaded into the ambulence one of the kids at the park finds the letter to Kathy that has fallen out of Brad's pocket and offers it to him. He says he doesn't need it any more. Later at the hospital we see Kathy arrive and hold Brad's hand as he's being wheeling to the emergency room.
