Detective Sergeant John Baccus is Inspector George Gently's arrogant young partner.Bacchus was paired with Inspector Gently to track down the notorious gangster Joe Webster, whom was responsible for the murder of Inspector Gently's wife. Gently had intended that tracking Webster down was to be his last case, before retiring. But, Gently not only had to deal with the case, he also had to deal with the headstrong Bacchus whom had been assigned to assist him and help keep him on the straight and narrow. In 1964, Underworld figure, Rattigan, whom Gently had sent down years ago, had been cleared on the grounds that evidence had been fabricated by Gently himself and is bent on revenge. Bacchus became torn between his loyalty to Gently and his ambition to make it to the Met. Gently found himself suspended from duty. After a shootout at a local cathedral, Gently was shocked to receive Bacchus's resignation, but soon realized his sergeant has lost his confidence. Gently insisted while Bacchus serves out his notice, he help him investigate a death in custody.Bacchus is known for being a overeager, opinionated young sergeant who plays fast and loose with police procedures.
