Jim Longworth continues the long tradition of likable jerks who are darned good at solving murder mysteries. Cocksure bordering on insufferably arrogant, Jim comes to the small, sleepy resort town of Palm Glade, Florida looking for a little rest-and-relaxation. Seems he was accused of sleeping with his chief's boss in his last job as a detective in Chicago. The chief even shot Jim in the buttocks for the offense, though the detective claims he was the only one in the department NOT helping the boss's wife two-time her husband.Jim received a settlement and moved south, hoping to take it easy and play a lot of golf. He still plays a decent amount of golf, but the high homicide rate in and around his new home makes for busy days and nights with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He prefers to work alone, never wears a uniform (can hardly be bothered to carry his badge, in fact) and annoys almost all of his coworkers thanks to his self-assured attitude and the fact that he is usually right when telling them how they should be doing their jobs. Just when you think Jim's incessant one-liners, tart comebacks and spot-on theories make him more clownish crime-solving machine than man, he meets and falls for a nurse, Callie, who can match him word-for-word and thought-for-thought (she's easy on the eyes, too).
