Jay makes several brief appearances in the film and is portrayed as a rather dim-witted bully. We first meet him and his friend Ernie when the film's main character, Max, is cycling through a graveyard on his way back from school. Jay and Ernie pop out from behind some gravestones, which they seem to be hanging around for want of something to do (rather than actually visiting a particular grave). They stop Max to question who he is and where he's from, and this is when we are first given the impression that neither Jay nor Ernie are very bright: When Max says that he is from Los Angeles, they look at each other, clearly unaware of where the stranger means (until he uses the common nickname LA ).In addition to seemingly not being very intelligent, Jay either has a poor memory or is not a very attentive friend. When he introduces Ernie to Max by his birth name instead of the nickname Ernie is now going by ('Ice'), Ernie asks, How many times I gotta tell you? and reminds Jay of his new nickname. (However, another explanation for this is that the two may have been friends for many years, and so Jay could be finding it difficult to break the habit of calling 'Ice' by his birth name. We cannot be sure, as we never find out the amount of time they have been friends.) Ernie then spins around to show Max the back of his hair, which has ICE shaved into it. Evidently, the friends think this style is cool. Max, however, finds it amusing. After he laughs, Jay and Ernie's mean streak begins to show.Although we never actually see them smoking, the two friends are likely smokers, as they ask Max for a cigarette. Displaying their simpler side again, they laugh and congratulate each other for making fun of Max's health when he says that he does not smoke. They move closer to him in an intimidating manner, and Jay asks if Max has any money on him. When he again says no, Ernie says, We don't get any smokes from you; we don't get any cash - what am I supposed to do with my afternoon? This may suggest that the two young men regularly steal from people they come across. Before the scene ends, Jay notices Max's trainers, which Ernie expresses a desire to wear. When their victim tries to ride off, Jay physically stops him. We do not see whether they take the trainers off of Max by physical force, but we know that they definitely do steal them, as Max can be seen riding away shoe-less.We next see Jay when Max and his little sister Dani are out Trick or Treating on Halloween night. He, Ernie, and other young men are throwing stolen candy bags around and being generally rowdy. Although Max attempts to leave un-seen via another exit, Dani approaches the group. Ernie puts out his foot to stop her, and he and Jay demand that she pays the toll of ten chocolate bars. When Dani mentions Max, Jay and Ernie mock the poor boy, humiliating him in front of their amused friends. Although the pair appear to be the main jokers and bullies of the group, it seems that Jay often leads Ernie in the jokes; usually starting a mocking gesture, which Ernie is quick to pick up on and continue. His appearance in the scene ends with Max giving his sister's candy to a very satisfied, mean-looking Ernie, who promptly digs into the sweets with Jay and the rest of their friends. We also find out that it is not Jay, but Ernie, who gets to wear the stolen trainers. This could be because the trainers do not fit Jay or could either be because he let Ernie have them or did not get a choice in the matter, possibly suggesting that Ernie is the one in charge .Jay and Ernie later become the Sanderson sisters' hostages when the witches come across the unlucky pair late on Halloween night (or 3:00AM the next morning). The rest of their friends have left, leaving the young men bored. Whilst Jay makes suggestions as to what they could do - such as looking in windows and watching women un-dress (again showing how immature and un-pleasant they can be) - Ernie complains of not feeling well. Jay shows a more attentive side when he points out that Ernie's stomach problems are (probably) due to eating too much candy. At this point, three witches (the film's main antagonists) come along, and one (Mary) grabs Ernie's trainer. Mary's special power is that she can sniff out children. Apparently she is also able to distinguish between each child's individual smell, as it is Max who she is looking for and it is Max's trainers (on Ernie's feet) that her power leads her to. Realising they have the wrong children, the witches (who are sisters) are about to leave when Jay makes the mistake of asking Ernie why it is only ugly chicks that stay out late. Funnily enough, it's the word chicks that Winifred (the oldest sister) takes offence to, and it leads to Jay and Ernie being locked in small cages that hang from the ceiling of the Sanderson house. Although they apologise and even call the witches cute , they are left in the cages to fear for the lives as Winnie and her sisters discuss the spell ingredient dead mans chongs , which the friends assume means tongues. Their part in the scene ends with Sarah Sanderson spinning Jay's cage round and round.Once the witches have retrieved their spellbook and kidnapped Dani Dennison and Thackery Binx (a former young man cursed by the witches to be an immortal cat), we see that Jay and Ernie are still locked in the cages and are being teased by Sarah and Mary. When Max bursts through the door to rescue his sister (and Thackery), he tricks the witches into believing that the sun has risen early, and they fall down thinking that it will kill them. The siblings take this chance to escape, and this is when Jay and Ernie pay for their past behaviour - when Ernie asks Max to get them out of the cages, he (Max) takes his trainers back from Ernie's feet and exits, leaving Jay and Ernie locked up.After Winifred realises they've been fooled and expresses anger over losing Dani, Sarah points out that they already have a child to suck the life out of (meaning Ernie or Jay). Jay clearly values his own life more than his friend's, as he points at Ernie and yells Him! Luckily for them both, Winifred is insistent on taking Dani's life first. The witches fly after the siblings, but cannot suck the life out of any children before the sun rises - thus, they explode in clouds of dust, leaving Jay and Ernie un-harmed. Although we do not see Jay again, we can probably assume that he and Ernie were rescued from the cages, as we do see the spellbook back in its glass box at the Sanderson home (implying that somebody went back inside).
