As an adult, he assembled a group of musicians to form the aptly named Blues Brothers Band. Jake was engaged at one point to an unnamed woman who he ended up leaving standing at the altar. He was arrested and served three years in the Joliet State Correctional Center in Illinois for armed robbery of a gas station trying to cover the band's room service tab for a hotel they stayed at during a Kiwanis show in Coal City, IL.Once released, he and his brother visited the orphanage where they grew up to fulfill a promise to visit Sister Mary Stigmata (also known as The Penguin), who, along with the maintenance man Curtis were the only real family the brothers had ever known. They learned that the place they had known for a large portion of their lives owed $5000 in back taxes to the state, and would be closed in a matter of days if not paid. Jake and Elwood subsequently made it their mission ( from God , as they frequently would say) to make the $5000 legitimately, and after re-assembling the band members managed to do just that with a major concert. Their efforts up until that point managed to attract the attention of the law, and they frequently had to slip from the grasp of apprehension. Jake and Elwood managed to outrun the entire Chicago Police, a group of white supremacists they had previously forced into a creek, a country band they impersonated and took a gig from, and the aforementioned ex-fiancee of Jake who attempts to kill him (and fail) on four different occasions, to finally arrive at the County Clerk's Assessor's Office in downtown Chicago to pay the back taxes for the orphanage in time, only to be arrrested a moment later. Once again, Jake, along with and Elwood and the band were incarcerated in Joliet, where he would never again leave from, dying within its walls years later.Elwood--along with the band-- would eventually be released, and would often speak fondly of him.
