Ivan was romantically involved with Shirley Schmidt, but Shirley broke it off. He turned up at Crane, Poole & Schmidt, a prestigious law firm that Shirley co-founded with Edwin Poole and Denny Crane, to find Shirley to announce that he was getting married to Missy, and one last fling for old times sake, and to make sure that marrying Missy is the right decision, but Ivan accidentally uttered Shirley's name in his vows at his wedding to Missy and ended it; only to be met with the cold shoulder from Shirley.
