The Librarian of Unseen University is one of the most popular characters in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of fantasy novels. A magical explosion (described in the second novel The Light Fantastic and included in the film The Colour Of Magic ) transformed him into an orangutan. He discovered that being an orangutan has many advantages for a librarian, and he has remained one ever since, resisting all the well-meant attempts to change him back. He finds having the equivalent of four hands and the ability to reach the high shelves without a ladder very useful.The Librarian's actual name has never been revealed in any of the novels. It is, however, mentioned in The Art of Discworld that it is widely suspected to be Dr. Horace Worblehat, but this is subject to confirmation. If his true name were known, he could be changed back into a human, and he has therefore used his access as a senior member of the faculty to erase his name from the records of the University.He features in almost all the books since The Light Fantastic . In Soul Music , he was the keyboard player for The Band with Rocks In and he remains the chief organist for the Unseen University (Hogfather). In Guards! Guards! , he joined the City Watch.
