Harry was Dexters adoptive father and Debras biological father. He died when they were young, but is an important part of the story as he appears posthumously to Dexter frequently to offer advice on difficult situations. Harry will usually represent a voice of caution and restraint. He will point out to Dexter when decisions he is considering violate The Code or run the risk of having his sons secret discovered.Background: Harry was a well-respected member of the Miami Metro PD who served as a detective. He found a 3-year old Dexter at a crime scene and ultimately adopted him. As he spent time with Dexter he discovered the boy had a disturbing fascination with murder, displaying psychopathic traits. Harrys response was to attempt to harness the urges, instilling in him what became Harry's Code. The Code dealt with the circumstances under which it was acceptable for Dexter to kill, stressing that no harm come to innocents.
