Eustace is a cousin of the Pevensie children. His parents are progressives (C. S. Lewis was profoundly conservative), and the only sort of living creatures that he likes are beetles. He gets to really know Edmund and Lucy when they must go visit the Scrubb family for some months during World War II, while Susan and Peter are in America. Eustace was spoiled as a child and disdains fantasy, especially the conversations Edmund and Lucy have about Narnia, so when the three are magically drawn into Narnia through a painting, Eustace finds the reality of Narnia an enormous shock. When the three are transported to King Caspian's ship Dawn Treader, he is horrified, while Edmund and Lucy are delighted. At first Eustace continues with his spoiled ways, but when he is tempted on an island by a dragon's treasure, he is (sort of karmically) turned into a dragon. Only then does he realize that he doesn't want to be separated from his cousins, King Caspian, and the rest of the crew. In the novel, Aslan returns him to human form when they are still on the island of the pool of gold; in the film, Eustace remains a dragon for much longer, helps to fight the sea serpent, and becomes a boy again when Aslan brings him and the magical seventh sword to Ramandu's Island. After the trauma of being transformed and with the help of Reepicheep, who turns into a real friend, he becomes a better person, capable of empathy, insight and courage. He appears in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle. In these last two stories, his best friend becomes Jill Pole, another human who is transported to Narnia with him.
