Erich Streator (Telly Savalas) is the ill-tempered husband and unloving stepfather who hates the doll his wife brings home--especially when it threatens to kill him--in The Twilight Zone episode Living Doll. Erich is unsympathetic, and the audience sides with the wife and stepdaughter. But we wonder if he has no reason at all to be bitter. The wife, Annabelle, brings up something from the past: Erich hadn't expected her daughter Christy to have been a part of their lives. We learn no more about this. Had she tricked him? Had she concealed that Christy existed? Was Christy supposed to have lived with her father--and then ended up living with her mother instead?Erich makes some small attempt to get along with Christy and his wife. But he's angry--about money, his stepdaughter, the Freudian gibberish Annabelle learns from her psychiatrist. And now a talking doll. The doll seems to be some supernatural manifestation of Christy's resentment toward her stepfather. The doll tells him she doesn't like him, later that she hates him and still later that she is going to kill him. Erich thinks the doll is a natural manifestation of Christy's and Annabelle's resentment. He accuses them of putting a walky-talky in it and saying these horrible things as a way of getting back at him.He soon finds out otherwise when he tries to destroy the doll with the tools in his garage, and can't. Not even an electric saw can make a mark on this weird toy. He throws the doll in the trashcan, hoping to be rid of it. But Annabelle threatens to leave him over his insane accusations and his attempts to rob his stepdaughter of her beloved Talky Tina. He's forced to give the doll back to Christy. But the doll makes good on her threat. It's no accident that Talky Tina is on the stairs in the middle of the night, making a whirring noise that wakes up Erich and prompts him investigate. It's no accident that Erich trips on the doll, causing him to fall down the stairs and break his neck. Tina falls with him, and the last thing Erich sees before he expires is the face of his murderess--a doll named Talky Tina.
