On the day of Connie Corleone's marriage to Carlo Rizzi, it is tradition that the bride's father, Don Corleone, honor requests of those who come to him with a favor to ask. One favor is asked by a baker. He has a young man working in his bakery who is about to be deported back to Italy. But this young man, Enzo, is a good baker, and more, the elder baker's daughter is in love with him. Happily, Don Corleone offers to arrange for Enzo to stay in the USA. He does this with the help of a friendly congressman. Some months later, after Don Corleone is gunned down on the street and is in the hospital, Michael discovers that the security detail has been sent away, and that his father is vulnerable. Until reinforcements arrive, Michael must find a way to protect his father. While figuring out how to do this, Enzo, the young baker, arrives with flowers for a visit. He offers to help Michael in any way he can. He stands on the steps of the hospital with Michael, coat collar turned up and hand positioned as though he has a gun, and is successful in helping Michael protect the Don. It is a very endearing scene, as the viewer knows that Enzo (who is terribly frightened) is a mild and simple man, not accustomed to violence, who nonetheless offers himself up to honor the man who has made his happy life possible.
