Elizabeth Effy Stonem is the quiet, mysterious younger sister of Tony Stonem. Observant and highly astute, Effy is painfully aware of her subtly unfortunate reality, sinking into a depression that progressively worsens throughout her four seasons on the show.To the other characters, Effy seems somewhat like a femme fatale : mysterious, sensual, and haphazard. However, this image is merely a cover, one that comes to crumble as Effy's depression worsens. For the other characters, Effy is both a source of fascination and resentment: while they wish in many ways that they could be as cool as her, they do not understand Effy and her often erratic ways. While Effy acts as though she is trapped by her surroundings, she is truly trapped by her complex and intelligent mind.During the first season, Effy is seen sneaking out of the Stonem house almost every night, going on wild escapades while Tony covers for her. She has taken a vow of silence in a futile effort to be noticed, disturbed that her parents favor Tony. Nonetheless, Tony is the only person that Effy truly cares about, because Tony is the only person that understands her. At a party in the eighth episode, Effy speaks for the first time: Sometimes I think I was born backwards...you know, come out of my mum the wrong way. I hear words go past me backwards. The people I should love, I hate, and the people I hate.... But Effy never finishes her thought, accidentally overdosing on stolen pharmaceutical drugs. Tony fortunately finds Effy and brings her to a hospital, but the Stonem parents send Effy to preparatory school as punishment. There, Effy proclaims that she does not have or need friends. In the third season, Effy becomes the central character, and her vices of drinking, doing drugs, partying, and having mindless sex as exemplified in the previous seasons become even more detrimental. Her parents split, and beside herself, Effy proclaims that she is officially 'off the rails'. She sinks even further into depression, uncharacteristically paying little attention to her appearance. A love triangle develops between Effy, Freddie McClair, and James Cook, adding more distress to Effy's life. While Effy truly loves Freddie, she clings to mindless engagements with Cook, afraid of emotional intimacy. Eventually, Effy chooses to be with Freddie, but she becomes tormented by the vulnerability that she feels in being in love.In the fourth season, Effy's depression develops into full-blown psychosis. She tries to commit suicide more than once but is saved on each occasion. Ultimately, she is hospitalized for her mental issues and is abused by her psychiatrist who, almost falling in love with Effy himself, attempts to make her forget her friends, including Freddie and Cook. The fourth series ends with Effy laughing in Freddie's shed with the rest of the group, blithely unaware that Freddie has been murdered.--Season 1 first shown Effy sneaking back into the Stonem household with him from her older brother, Tony; a routine they are both clearly familiar with. She is never seen to speak even after being directly asked why by Michelle, Tony's girlfriend. During Effy's centric episode, Tony is made to care about someone other than himself when Effy goes missing during a night of partying with a boy called Spencer. After taking different drugs, Spencer leads Effy to a different party where Josh (Michelle's ex-boyfriend) injects her with stolen pharmaceuticals. When Effy overdoses, Josh tells Tony that he must have sex with unconcious sister before he lets her go. This turns out to be a revenge scheme on Josh's part for Tony's scheming in his relationship with Michelle. After Tony begs for forgiveness, Josh lets them go where Tony rushes Effy to hospital with his best friend, Sid Jenkins. Effy is told she'll be fine. In the finale, Effy is seen telling Tony that he is a wanker for how he treated Michelle when they were together. She is sent to a private school by her parents after her drug episode. Effy witnesses Tony being hit by a bus, screaming and silently crying by his side.Season 2 shows Effy now speaking openly and continuing to party despite her and Tony's traumatic experience. Effy is shown now looking after Tony after his accident, comforting him after his nightmares by reading him Greek mythology. She is also talking to Michelle and Sid although she is fairly unfriendly to them. It's revealed that Effy + Tony's father is away on a business trip whilst their mother stays at home, becoming depressed and taking Tony's medication. It's apparent that Effy has taken on the parenting role, washing and drying the laundry and watching over her mum. At school, Effy's art teacher appoints Effy the task of looking after the new girl, Pandora by telling her that she must do well in her GCSE Art or she'll be expelled. Although Effy clearly objects, she begins to allow Pandora to follow her around even bringing her home. Sid also explains his problems to Effy in which she agrees that in exchange for him doing her Art coursework, she will sort out his struggling social life; particularly his relationship with Cassie. Effy + Pandora pick up some weed on the way to Cassie's where she inquires about her relationship with Sid but doesn't probe the subject. She is then shown taking drugs, selling them and Michelle's broken watch which in turn angers Tony. However, it's revealed that Effy didn't sell it, she instead had it repaired the word 'forever' engraved on it which softened Michelle enough to speak to Tony again. Meanwhile, Effy sends a friend of hers called Jake to Cassie's - knowing the chance of them sleeping together- before taking photos of them through the window. She then scattered them throughout Sid's room, prompting him to meet up with her where they made up. At school, Effy doesn't use the artwork Sid had done for her instead telling her teacher that her art was conceptual in which she'd used an array of emotions to help her. Effy's father returns to a clean house and his wife in an elegant state; presumably done by Effy. Season 3 begins with Effy catching the eye of three best friends; Cook, Freddie and JJ on her first day at Roundview College. When Freddie tries to strike up conversation with her, suggesting a relationship beyound 'just friends', Effy says that his two friends wants the same thing. She then devises a list of things that students aren't supposed to do in school (drugs, sex, porn and arson) and says whoever completes the list first will 'get to know her better'. Cook is the first to complete the list, barring smoking weed and having sex in school. Effy promptly excuses herself from class, getting Cook to follow her. They light up a spliff and have sex in the nurses' office. Effy gets to know her classmates better during the season and her suspicion of her mother having an affair is confirmed when she catches her with her father's boss. When her parents split up, Effy responds by going to Pandora's girls-only 'pajama party' where she gets trashed. Having ignored Pandora's rules of no boys, drugs or drinking; Effy leaves. The next day, Effy is shown returning to Pandora's presumably to apologise only to find that Cook and Pandora had slept together. When Effy confronts her, Pandora uses the opportunity to stand up for herself, accusing Effy of not putting enough effort into their friendship. Effy doesn't argue. Effy rebuffs Freddie when he states they'll be 'good together' by telling him she'd break his heart. Later, Freddie expresses his feelings to her on a deeper level which leads to them sharing a passionate kiss although Effy returns to Cook. In the next episode, Freddie and Effy have obvious tension although she and Pandora are on better terms. JJ, Freddie and Cook's mutual friend, is encouraged by Emily to confront Effy about how it is her fault that the once close bond he shared with them has been destroyed. Effy is apologetic although she says that she can't guarantee she'll stop. Naomi later points out that Effy is in love with Freddie although Effy feebly denies it. In her centric episode, Effy has clearly 'gone off the rails' and although she is prepared to break up with Cook-which she does without telling him- and confront Freddie with her feelings, she is discouraged by his relationship with Katie. When the group goes camping in the woods, Cook turns up uninvited and starts revealing secrets including the fact that he's been sleeping with Pandora behind Effy's back. Under the influence of mushrooms, Effy runs off into the woods where she's attacked by an insecure Katie who spits on her before attempting to choke her. Effy retaliates by hitting her over the head with a rock. Effy is comforted afterwards when she and Freddie have sex for the first time. The happiness is short-lived when its discovered Katie has gone missing which in turn, panics Effy. Katie is eventually found and taken to hospital where the gang-including Freddie-learn what truly happened and turn against Effy. She then blacks out, awakening in a car with Cook. She doesn't know where they are or where they are going but only that they're going together. It's revealed that Cook's been driving them to one 'shitty town after another' which Effy hase begun increasingly bored of. Cook, however, tells her that this is the town where his father lives. Effy grows worried for Cook after seeing how his father manipulates him and calls Freddie for help. She tells him that she loves him shortly before hanging up. When Freddie and JJ arrive, they decide the boy's relationships with Effy will be decided by the small town's race. JJ wins the race and decides that they should get things straight once and for all. He forces the two other boys to admit their love for Effy and get her to choose between them. She doesn't say anything although her 'look says it all' when her gaze lingers over Freddie, causing Cook to storm off. When Freddie and Effy are alone, they make up and have sex. The following morning, the group make their way home.Season 4 shows that Effy spent the summer in Italy with her mother, having broken up with Freddie over the guilt she caused to Cook + Katie and doesn't contact anyone. She doesn't turn up to college on the first day with the others assuming she's still in Italy. In reality, Effy is in England comforting Pandora when Thomas returned. Effy returns to college, sits next to Freddie and tells him that he was the one she was thinking about all summer. She then hugs Cook whilst Freddie watches. At a party, Effy dances with Freddie before kissing him as Cook watches. In a fury, Cook lashes out a party-goer called Shankey and headbutts JJ without realising who he's hurting. Effy + Freddie see him fighting and leave. Effy + Freddie kiss again in the next episode which is overseen by Cook. He is subsequently expelled and eventually arrested for dealing the drugs that caused a suicide. Effy visits Cook in prison and tells him that she loves Freddie. She also says that love is a 'headfuck' but that she's enjoying it anyway which Cook seems to understand. Effy's mother goes on an extended holiday leaving Effy alone. Effy + Freddie move in together, taking drugs and having sex. Soon Effy begins to act strangely, cutting out pictures of death and sticking them to her mother's wall whilst mentioning creatures coming for her. She decides to throw a 'goodbye party', freaking much of the gang out. Freddie manages to break Effy's door down, finding her under the bed and visibly shaken. She tells him that he's the only one she can trust. After Freddie clears the party out, Cook remains. However, when Effy sees him, she freaks out and screams at him to leave. Freddie begins to believe Effy is developing psychosis, an illness his mother suffered with and decides to ask his grandfather for help. While taking Effy to a calm field, she says creatures are coming for her and she's not strong enough to fight them after getting together with Freddie. She sees a group of people coming towards them and freaks out, believing them to be creatures. Freddie scares them off. At her insistence, Freddie drives Effy home only to see her mother talking to a police officer. Not prepared to give up on her, Freddie takes her somewhere else. On the way, they run into a Judgement Day parade. The amount of people in demonic costumes freaks Effy out and she runs away, blaming Freddie. Katie, who was dancing on a float, spots her and rescues her where she and Freddie takes her to his grandfather's. While Freddie talks to his grandfather, Katie + Effy wait in the hall. Katie panics when Effy doesn't come out of the bathroom. Freddie runs to the bathroom where he finds Effy unconcious with both wrists slashed. He rushes her to the hospital where she's treated. She later tells him to go away. Later, Freddie talks to Effy's mum, Anthea. They then realise Effy needs both of them now but Freddie tells her that she needs to see Effy alone and runs off. He returns to Effy's house, rips down the 'death' pictures and burns them on a bonfire. Cook arrives and tells him not to give up on Effy. Since Effy's suicide attempt, she's been admitted to a psychiatric hospital under the guidance of John T Foster. As she's permitted to leave, although with conditions from John, Effy visits Freddie. She confirms she only has love for him and 'that is all'. However at a celebration party where the gang are happy with their A Level results, Effy declares that this is a good bye party and she's saying goodbye to everyone-including Freddie. Effy's condition deteriorates to the point where she can't remember who she is or who her friends are. Cook notices this and after a brief chase, she demands to be taken back to Freddie. As Cook does so, he notices a duffel bag, hinting at Freddie's near escape. The two talk and Cook leaves, seemingly done with chasing after Effy. Effy is admitted back to the psychiatric hospital, although not under the guidance of Foster who was using hypnotic techniques to make her forget things. After a scuffle with Freddie, John leaves, and Effy states that Freddie deserves better than her. Freddie dismisses the comment and falls asleep holding her hand as she says she loves him over and over again. The next morning, Freddie is invited to John's house where he tells him to leave Effy alone. When Freddie tries to leave, the door is locked. John enters the room, brandishing a baseball bat and tells him that he wants 'Effy for himself' and that 'she really does love you, you know.' We hear Freddie try to reason with John as he is beaten mercilessly. After more yells and blood splattered on the window, John continues to hit the now silent Freddie. In the finale, Effy is seen in hospital and recovering well. She is concerned over Freddie's sudden departure and believes that her condition scared him off. After she's seen in hospital with Katie + Pandora, Cook finds her in Freddie's shed, now out of hospital. She shares her concerns and rejection to him. He then gives her Freddie's notebook where he declared his love for Effy on every page. Effy's story ends with her being comforted in the knowledge of Freddie's feelings for her, and celebrating his birthday with the gang in the shed.Effy was portrayed by Kaya Scodelaro. Show less «
