Dr. Rene Belloq is a rival archeologist and the arch nemesis to Indiana Jones. In the opening teaser of Raiders of the Lost Ark , Belloq manipulates the local tribes to hold Indy at arrow point while he steals the priceless idol that Jones had successfully acquired at the risk of losing his life. Belloq reminds Jones that there is nothing he can possess that he cannot take away. Later in the film, it is revealed that the Nazi-Archeological expedition to Cairo, in search of the Ark of the Covenant, is being led by Belloq himself. After a game of cat and mouse, Marion Ravenwood, Indy's love interest, ends up in Gestapo custody. Belloq takes a liking to her, and begins wooing her to add insult to injury for his arch rival.Once unearthed, the Ark begins switching masters back and forth between Indiana and the Nazis, before it is finally opened by Belloq amidst an ancient ritual. Belloq's hubris gets the better of him as he stares deep into the Ark after it is opened. As a result, he and the rest of the Nazi expedition are destroyed by the power of the Ark in a gruesome manner. They are sucked into the confines of the Ark, and never seen again. Show less «
