Rachel is a brilliant but sometimes emotionally immature Detective Constable. Intuitive, Rachel's observations are often key to solving an investigation, earning her the nickname Sherlock from her colleagues. However her impulsive nature has a tendency to get her into trouble with her DCI and initially with fellow colleague Janet Scott. Over the 4 seasons, Rachel has matured emotionally and in season 4 was promoted to Detective Sergeant after passing the promotion board.Relationships aren't noted to be Rachel's strong point. In series one she finds out her boyfriend of several years, Nick Savage, has a wife and two children. She finishes with him but he tried to have her murdered and later, he himself is murdered by Rachel's brother Dominic. In series 2, she meets Sean McCarthy who she went to school and police training with. They get back together, having a casual relationship before agreeing to get married to him (seen in series 3). However once married, Rachel feels suffocated by Sean's constant presence, cheating on him several times including with colleague Kevin Lumb (series 3). They later get divorced. In series 4, Rachel is seen having a relationship with Will Pemberton, but again this doesn't work out. Rachel is afraid of what her colleagues will say as Will is higher up in CID and she believes they may think she is sleeping her way to the top. They split up but in the final episode of series 4, Janet implied that he is at Gill's retirement party looking for her.Rachel has a rocky family background, her mother walked out on her when she was a teenager, leaving her and her sister (Allison) and brother (Dominic) to survive on their own, initially with their alcoholic father. Dominic is later arrested for armed robbery, spending time in prison. When he was released, he turned up on Rachel's door in series 2. Later he murdered her ex-boyfriend Nick at the end of series 2. She has a strained relationship with sister Allison, especially when Rachel reconnected with her mother. This is noted at Rachel's wedding (series 3). However, when her mother dies in series 4 (ep7), Rachel and Allison are seen to be closer.
