Dahlia Williams (portrayed by Jennifer Connelly) is a mother involved in a nasty divorce with her husband, Kyle (Dougray Scott). Caught in the middle is her daughter, Cecelia (Ariel Gade). Neglected, abused and finally abandoned by her mother as a child, Dahlia strives mightily to be a good mother to 'Cece', but as the film progresses we see events taking a toll on her. She suffers frequent migraines, and is likely addicted to the painkillers she takes to combat them. Not only is the divorce stressful, but the apartment building Dahlia has moved into with her daughter turns out to be full of mysterious and strange happenings. What is revealed is that the building is being haunted by the ghost of a small girl who was abandoned by her parents and then accidently drowned. This young ghost, named Natasha Rimsky (played by Perla Haney-Jardine) at first becomes Cece's playful 'invisible friend', but events soon turn ugly when Dahlia's husband attempts to use Cece's mental state as an excuse to have her seized from Dahlia's custody. Dahlia sternly tells CeCe not to speak to 'Natasha' any more, the result being that the ghost child, desperate for someone to love her and raging at the rejection, turns on them. Events come to ahead when Natasha tries to drown CeCe in the bathtub so she can replace her in her mother's affections. Dahlia desperately tries to break down the shower door but is immobilized and rendered helpless by huge streams of 'dark water' which Natasha controls. Desperate to save CeCe, and identifying with the pain of a lost little girl as only another lost little girl can, Dahlia strikes an awful bargain. She offers to stay with Natasha and be her mother forever if she will spare CeCe. With a beautific smile, Natasha agrees, and releases CeCe. Dahlia then willingly allows herself to be drowned. At the end of the film we see CeCe leaving the apartment building with her father, when the elevator doors close, locking CeCe in by herself. That is when Dahlia appears to her and hugs her and kisses her and ties her hair into a familiar braid, while whispering into her ear, My beautiful girl..........whenever you need me, I'm here.
