Pollard is the captain of the luxury cruise ship Seabourne Legend, on which Annie and Alex set sail for a relationship-mending Caribbean cruise. Early into the cruise, a dishelved and drunk passenger, John Geiger, stumbles onto the bridge -- disturbing Pollard's previously uneventful evening. Pollard views the intrusion as a simple case of too much alcohol and sees no connection to the fact the ship is now four degrees off course. But later as Pollard heads to join the passengers at dinner, he encounters Geiger (now dressed in an officer's uniform) on deck. Initially mistaking him for the crew member he has sent to check the navigation error, Pollard questions him. But he all too quickly learns the dire meaning of Geiger's reply: Captain Pollard, good evening. How can you be running the ship if you're not on the bridge? Who IS running the ship? Oh yeah -- I am.
